Tartans golf takes second at home invitational

Carnegie Mellon men’s golf competed in two events this week, taking fifth place on the road and second place at home.

The team finished fifth out of 15 teams in the two-day Mid-Atlantic Regional last Monday with a team score of 631 (313–318). The two-day event was held at Hershey Country Club in Hershey, Pa.
The Tartans finished behind first-place St. John Fisher College (607), second-place Wesley College (608), and Washington & Jefferson College and Allegheny College, which tied for third with a two-day total of 613.

Carnegie Mellon junior Alex Timmons and Brad Cieslinski from W&J tied for 13th. Both shot a 161 (73–81) during the two-day event. Junior Joshua Chen and sophomore Chris Lee tied for 25th, carding 159 for a two-day total.

Senior Howard Smith and sophomore Brett Cannaday rounded out the Tartans’ scoring with a 162 (80–82) and 166 (79–87), respectively.

“With Hershey, overall we were pretty inconsistent. We were not pleased with the result because we didn’t play to the best of our ability,” Cannaday said.

Last Thursday, the Tartans hosted their annual invitational at the Longue Vue Club with St. Vincent College (298), Davis & Elkins College (309), Westminster College (318), and Waynesburg University (335) in attendance.

Carnegie Mellon took second at the home invite with a team score of 308, just 10 strokes behind St. Vincent.

Smith and Chen tied for fifth overall, leading the Tartans with scores of 74. Timmons and Lee both carded an 80, and Cannaday shot an 86.

Four individual players entered the invitational for the Tartans: Senior Denver Faulk carded an 84, first-year Brent Driscoll and senior Blake Darby shot 84 and 86, respectively, and sophomore Nick Burkholder scored a 92.

“There is a lot of potential within the team. We are finally playing well and bringing it together,” Cannaday said. “We have a pretty good shot at making nationals. This is the time of the season when big tournaments come up so we are looking forward to tomorrow.”

The golf team will compete at the University Athletic Association championships today in Orlando, Fla.
