Men’s tennis defends championship title away
The Carnegie Mellon men’s tennis team started its season strong with a championship win at the Nancy J. Heath Gator Invitational hosted by Allegheny College, beating out the Allegheny Gators and the Division II West Virginia University Mountaineers to defend its title. The team's first match was originally scheduled for last Friday against Robert Morris College but was postponed until Thursday due to rain.
Men’s soccer defeats Juniata 5–0
The Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team upheld its winning record with a 5–0 win over Juniata College Saturday night. The Tartans dominated the entire 90 minutes by playing the ball on the ground and keeping possession despite less than perfect field conditions. Juniata College struggled to keep up with the skilled Carnegie Mellon side and ultimately, could not hold off the Tartans' offense. Carnegie Mellon improves its record to 4–0–1 and is currently ranked 16th overall in the country and second in the Mid Atlantic Region.
Volleyball defeats host Gettsyburg on the road
The Carnegie Mellon volleyball team spent the weekend in Gettysburg, Pa. competing in the Gettysburg College Blast tournament. The Tartans entered the weekend hoping to continue their streak after two wins last Sunday at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational. With a lot to prove after a tough start to the season, Carnegie Mellon fought hard but was only able to come away from the weekend with a 3–0 victory against the hosting Gettysburg Bullets and two losses, 1–3 and 2–3, against the St. Vincent College Bearcats and Daemen College, respectively.
Women’s soccer records first loss of the season
The Carnegie Mellon women’s soccer team fell to the Lady Crusaders of host Capital University with a disappointing 3–0 result, marking the team’s first defeat of the season. Entering this weekend, the Tartans were ranked 22nd in the nation and fourth in the Great Lakes region, but Saturday's result drops their record to 3–1–1.
Cross country runs at Waynesburg Saturday
Last Saturday, the Carnegie Mellon cross country teams competed in the Waynesburg Invitational in Waynesburg, Pa. Despite the rainy conditions, the Tartans delivered a solid performance overall. Both the men’s and women’s team came in sixth place out of 13 teams with 143 and 131 points, respectively. Allegheny College finished first on the men’s side with 27 points and Messiah College won the women’s race with 55 points.
Football drops 19–10 decision at Grove City Saturday, tallies 1–1 record
Turnovers and a second-half collapse were the story on a humid, rainy Saturday, as the Carnegie Mellon football team suffered a tough road loss, 19–11, to Grove City College. The loss moved the Tartans' record back to 1–1. The Grove City Wolverines scored 16 straight second-half points to pull away in the game and even their record, which also stands at 1–1.

After appearing in a record 10 grand slam finals in a row and spending an unprecedented 237 weeks as the world’s top ranked tennis player, tennis fans were shocked when Federer failed to advance past the semifinals of the Australian Open this past January. Unsurprisingly, Federer went on to lose in the finals of the French Open, as he had the past two years, but people who thought the Australian Open may have been a fluke were forced to jump ship when Federer lost in the final match at Wimbledon, where he had won the past five years on the grass surface making him seem unstoppable.
