Volleyball defeats host Gettsyburg on the road
The Carnegie Mellon volleyball team spent the weekend in Gettysburg, Pa. competing in the Gettysburg College Blast tournament. The Tartans entered the weekend hoping to continue their streak after two wins last Sunday at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational. With a lot to prove after a tough start to the season, Carnegie Mellon fought hard but was only able to come away from the weekend with a 3–0 victory against the hosting Gettysburg Bullets and two losses, 1–3 and 2–3, against the St. Vincent College Bearcats and Daemen College, respectively.
The Tartans faced St. Vincent Friday but came up short. After losing the first two games 25–19 and 25–18, the Tartans rallied in the third, winning 21–25. They could not hold off the Bearcats in the fourth game, losing 25–14. Sophomore Aislinn McCloskey led the Tartans with 14 kills, followed by sophomore Caroline Size and senior Chisom Amaechi with nine kills each. Junior setter Sam Carter finished the match with 37 assists.
After a night’s rest, Carnegie Mellon split its two matches Saturday. The Tartans first dropped a tough 3–2 decision to Daemen. McCloskey again led the Tartans with 15 kills, and a strong performance by Amaechi helped keep Carnegie Mellon in the match. Amaechi recorded 11 kills and a career-high 10 blocks. Junior Jessica Brackin added another 10 blocks, while sophomore libero Cameron Griffin and junior Cara Fatigati recorded 16 and 15 digs, respectively.
Determined to come away with one win for the weekend, the Tartans stepped up their performance and defeated the host Gettysburg College 3–0. In their clear win over Gettysburg, Size finished with 10 kills and Carter added another 29 assists and three service aces.
While Carnegie Mellon was not as successful as the team would have hoped to be on the weekend, McCloskey’s performance was strong enough to get her named to the all-tournament team.
The Tartans travel to Point Park University Wednesday.
