ATHLETE PROFILE: Aislinn McCloskey
Recently receiving the honor of Volleyball Athlete of the Week from the University Athletic Association (UAA), sophomore Aislinn McCloskey has had a promising beginning to her first fall season with the team. The Tartan took time to talk to newcomer McCloskey about how the sport affects her life at Carnegie Mellon University and her hopes for her rookie season.
Men’s soccer continues to go undefeated away
The Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team went into a double overtime last Wednesday against Washington & Jefferson University Presidents, ending 0–0 after nearly three hours of play. The former 16th-ranked Tartans fought hard, with many scoring chances which in the end failed to prove lethal. Carnegie Mellon wrapped up this weekend’s play with wins against Muskingum College, 3–2, and Franciscan University, 4–1. The team improves its record to 3–0–1.
Women’s soccer records two wins this weekend
The Carnegie Mellon women's soccer tournament kicked off Saturday with the first match between the hosting Tartans and the 18th-ranked Elizabethtown College Blue Jays, with a 1–0 result in favor of the home team. The Tartans defeated the Haverford College Fords, 1–0, on Sunday. Senior and co-captain Abby Coffin tallied both games' only goals, improving the Tartans' record to 3–1–0
Football defeats Ohio Wesleyan, 35–7, on the road
The Carnegie Mellon football team came out strong in the beginning of Saturday's game against the Ohio Wesleyan College Bishops in Delaware, Ohio, seizing an early lead of 14–0 in the first quarter and remained a tough team to beat as the minutes clocked down to win 35–7. The victory was not only the first of the season but also contributes to the streak of 10 season opener wins that dates back to the 1999 season.
Cross country starts season at Duquesne Duals
The Carnegie Mellon cross country team kicked off the season at the Duquesne Duals in Schenley Park in Pittsburgh last Saturday. Both the men’s and women’s teams competed well against the tough Division I teams with the men’s team (6–2) finishing third and the women’s team (4–3) taking fourth-place. Duquesne's teams finished first in their respective races.
Volleyball rebounds with wins on Sunday
After a challenging weekend Aug. 29 and 30 at Ohio Northern University, the Carnegie Mellon volleyball team headed to Washington, Pa. to take on Muskingum College and Capital University in the Washington & Jefferson Holiday Invitational this past weekend. The team started out the tournament with two losses before rebounding Sunday with two wins, moving their record to 2–6.
COMMENTARY: Go Team
Now that two weeks have passed since the Olympic torch was extinguished in Beijing, the fervor of the Olympiad’s 17 days is beginning to fade from memory. Of the shear volume of feats that were accomplished throughout the games, only a few things will be left emblazoned in our minds as time goes by. In every Olympic games, individual achievements are what are celebrated the most and thus remembered best. We should not forget those medals that were captured – or lost - by a team effort.
Women’s tennis hosts Carnegie Mellon Invitational
A Division III NCAA championship? Some teams may cower to expectations of that magnitude, but not the Carnegie Mellon women's tennis team. After each member of the team played four to five matches over the weekend in the Carnegie Mellon Tennis Invitational, it’s hard to refute such swagger.
